January 2022 Highlights

General / 07 February 2022

During last month, I found some small weekly courses that were held by TheSign Comics & Arts Academy and taught by Silvano Mezzatesta. All taught in Italian (which helped me a lot in continuing to improve my listening of the language).

The courses were about the anatomy of all kinds of animals, focusing on an artistic perspective, in order to be able to rapidly create a sketch and capture the flow in the animals' different poses and movements. We took a look at the diversity in animals, dividing the topics from mammals, to animals that swim, fly, etc.

We broke down their different shapes in the most primitive ways, like how some animals will have more squared traits and others are rounder; how the different animals stand and the variations in their limbs; to identify key features that let's you recognize the silhouette of a canid's vs a feline's head, for example.

Another detail that I loved the most about the instructor was that he also considered students that might not have/were not working on a computer. He would often suggest if you were working traditionally, to use tools like a lightbox and thin paper for you to be able to draw with different layers, like you would digitally.

Some of my studies:

"Identificare l'animale prima di disegnare"

First make sure you can identify the animal by their main shapes (for example, how the cow's body form square shapes) before going into details.

(some of my notes are a mix of Spanish and Italian, haha)

Even though we are using photo references, the instructor would often encourage to first study the flow of the animal in the refences and then apply that study to generate your own poses, so that you just not trace all your reference.

"Correggere prima di cancellare"

"Correct before deleting" is another detail that the instructor pointed out. Often in digital art we would keep pressing ctrl+z or erasing immediately (since it's faster to do so), but when you are doing studies, you won't be able see what's really wrong if you continuously delete before correcting.

Concepting Star Kissed Dragon sculpt - zBrush sculpt timelapse

Making Of / 26 November 2020

Hello guys!

I'm sharing a zbrush timelapse I did of this piece.

This is one of the dragons I want to make for a long term personal project called Starry Sky of Dragons.

Starry Sky of Dragons is a big personal project of mine where I want to illustrate different scenes of dragons interacting with stars or wandering in the sky with a short story in the background (I want to practice my storytelling and illustration skills). The long term goal is to later make a compilation of these illustrations and publish them as an artbook.

Devlog - Creating the UI design for Amazonia Rescue

Making Of / 19 November 2020

Hello guys!

I've been wanting to share some of my process designing the art for a mobile indie game made in Unreal Engine 4. This is a game I'm working on with Test Studios Games which it's really a standalone 2D version of one of the minigames found in the main one called Cool Earth: A Company Against Global Warming (this game in currently under development. If you try it out, you can help the development of this game by leaving us some feedback ❤).

We are creating 2D standalone versions of these minigames in order to have liter versions of Cool Earth available for kids that have lower end phones.

Hope you find something useful in this video and if you have any inquiries or suggestions about the process, let me know!

Sculpting Sushi - zBrush Timelapse

Making Of / 13 November 2020

Since Nintendo released a new kart themed with their blue shark Sushi on Mario Kart Tour, I had to make a sculpt fan art tribute to it. Sushi is one of my favorite characters from Nintendo, even if it's just in the back ready to give you damage.

Total time spend sculpting + polypaint: 2 hours.

Here I share the timelapse video process of this sculpt, feel free to check it out!

Sculptober 2020 - Nature

General / 21 October 2020

I've been a bit slow with sculpting this month, between work, a couple birthday presents I want to make and other challenges, but Sculptober really has me inspired into creating overall...

Since starting this challenge, I've been quite creative that it's even affecting my sleep hours as of now.

Anyway, here's a small turntable of another prompt: Nature. I sculpted Makar the korok, a creature from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Took me around 2hrs.

This sculpt was based on an illustration I found on Pinterest by Veep illustration.

Started the challenge this weekend between free time of my other projects. I will try to make super short sculpts with the prompts.

For the Wing prompt I went with a fanart of my favorite bird pokemon: Torchic!

Devlog - Some UI Design for Cool Earth | Timelapse of workflow

Making Of / 11 September 2020

Hello guys!

I just want to share the news that the first public playable version of Cool Earth went live this week!

This is an indie educational mobile game I've been working on for quite a while. It's still under development. I've been tasked with the UI design and character creation. But not long ago I've started to document my art workflow for both personal record and for sharing it in the community, so I've made a timelapse of what I was working the week before this launch:

We are a small team working on making fun educational games. This one's about global warming awareness put together in a little single-player mobile game where you'll play classic minigames and help reduce the CO2 emissions on Earth. Available only for Android.

Feel free to check it out (: And if you do, let me know what you think/any feedback.
